Series > The DNA of Discipleship
|
The development and function of all living organisms depends upon a microscopic substance commonly known as DNA. DNA is absolutely essential to life and possesses some fascinating properties that can be used to illustrate spiritual truths as well as physical ones. DNA, for example, is formed by the intertwining of two strands of molecules – a form known as a double-helix. The two strands are held together by chains of adenine, guanine, thymine and cytosine molecules. It is the pattern of these molecular chains, linking these two strands, that makes the genetic “code” which provides instructions for the flourishing of life. In an analogous sense, the healthy development and function of a Christian disciple’s life also depends on a DNA of sorts. Each disciple’s life contains two strands – the life that she or he lives when gathered with other disciples and the life that gets lived when he or she goes out into the wider world. What ties these strands together into a creative whole is the chain of worship, growth and service. Together, this structure forms the spiritual code out of which God brings forth the fullness of a maturing disciple’s life. |
